FREE EXTERIOR PAINT

Spring offers a great opportunity to spruce up. Dust shelves. Wash blankets. Grab some freebies.

South Floridians can get house paint, trees and other handy products and services without denting their bank balances. Bonus feature: Many of these useful freebies also are good for the environment.

Here is what's available:

• Free paint (Broward): Leftover latex paint that residents drop off through Broward County Waste and Recycling Services programs are reblended and repackaged as exterior paints in several hues, including turquoise, terra cotta and beige. The recycled paints are available in five-gallon buckets to Broward residents via participating municipalities. The paints also are offered at some public events, including Earth Day Extravaganza, April 25, at Plantation Heritage Park

• Free paint (Miami-Dade): Usable leftover interior and exterior paints are offered, as is, from the Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management. The selection and availability vary based on what's been dropped off. The information is listed on the department's website.
